A famous case of organized crime in Lithuania.

More than 23 years ago - 1993, October 12th, a journalist Vitas Lingys was killed by a hired killer named Igoris Achremovas. The fateful Tuesday morning “Respublika” journalist Vitas Lingys Went to work from his home when he faced his assassin. He was shoot in the head and chest, because the bullets hit his heart he died immediately.

He wrote about the criminal activities of the structures in Lithuania, he tried to fight them and to spread the information collected. One of the main objects he wrote about was one of the most known organized crime group in Lithuania “Vilniaus Brigada”. He was the first who publicized who are the main “Vilniaus Brigada” leaders, which were Borisas Dekanidze and Igoris Tiomkinas.

In 1994 November 10th. Lithuanian Supreme Court announced the final verdict. Borisas Dekanidze was sentenced to death penalty for organizing a murder of 33 years old journalist Vitas Lingys. Death sentence was executed in 1995, it was the last sentence of this type in Lithuania ever.

The journalist Vitas Lingys is buried in the cemetery of the capital in Antakalnis where many other famous politics and public figures are buried.
