The founders of the McDonald’s restaurant, Richard and Maurice McDonald, moved to California to seek the opportunities they felt unavailable in New England. Failing in the movie business, they subsequently proved successful in operating drive drive-in restaurant.

Brothers opened the first McDonald restaurant in 1940 in San Bernardino, California. Back then, it was sit-down restaurant.

The McDonald brothers shut down their restaurant for three months for alterations (pasikeitimai). In December it reopens as a self-service drive-in restaurant. The menu is reduced to nine items: hamburger, cheeseburger, soft drinks, milk, coffee, potato chips and slice of pie. The main dish was hamburger which cost 15 cents.

In general brothers was selling products for the half the price and in the half of time, so costumers could get the order cheaper and faster than competing restaurants.
