Tulipmania Of The Dutch Golden Age

Tulipmania of the Dutch Golden Age.

Before 1593 the Dutch didn’t know of a flower called “tulip” but in 1630s the Dutch were willing to give their houses for a couple of tulip bulbs. So how did the price of a tulip increase to a point where people sold their houses and much more for some tulips?

It all started in 1593 when Carolus Clusius bought the first tulip bulbs from the Ottoman Empire.

He planted the tulips in his garden and intended to do research on them. Soon after, Clusius’s neighbors stole some of his tulips and sold them for easy money. The flower was nothingzlike any other flower that the Dutch had seen and it quickly became a luxury item. The demand of the flower started to rise as the wealthy people used the flower in artworks, festivals, decorations….

As the popularity of the flower grew so did the price of the tulip. People saw the demand for the tulip and they started to risk a lot buying one, hoping they can sell it for a profit. The profit earned from the flower, made more people to join and risk everything for a tulip.
