The View Review: A View From The Bridge Review

A view from the bridge review.

A view from the bridge is a play by American playwright Arthur Miller. It first premiered on September 29th, 1955 at the Coronet theatre on Broadway. The play is narrated by a lawyer Alfieri, who tells us a story about the Carbone family – Eddie, his wife Beatrice and their niece Catherine. The story covers how the Carbone family were first seen awaiting for their cousins from Sicily, Marco and Rodolpho. From the very first moments Catherine and Rodolpho shared great chemistry between one another which clearly annoyed Eddie. As the play goes, Eddie finds more and more things that annoy him about his niece‘s new lover, with time he starts to truly hate Rodolpho. Finally when the happy couple decided to get married, Eddie could not refrain from reporting Marco and Rodolpho to the police for illegal immigration. His unexpected decision made everyone, including his family, dislike him and his action towards the situation. Marco was the one who was extremly annoyed, so he decided to get revenge on Eddie, during their fight Eddie pulls out a knife which only makes the situation worse, at the end Eddie dies in Beatrice‘s arms.

Themes like love, desire and law were portrayed in the play. The obvious love and chemistry between Catherine and Rodolpho. Eddie‘s secret desire – Catherine which he truly admired, but never admited to. Law was present through out the entire play, since Alfieri himself was a lawyer who told us the story and also by law Marco and Rodolpho were illegal immigrants and the fact made a huge impact on the plotline.

Eddie Carbone was a longshoreman who lived with his wife Beatrice and niece Catherine in Red Hook, Brooklyn.
