They were doing a safety test on reactor 4 at Chernobyl on April 26th, 1986. The 1000 ton plate that was protecting the reactor's core was blown off. Due to the lack of a safety container, isotope flames burned for weeks.

The night of the disaster, two employees died. Within weeks, 28 individuals had died. Over a hundred people have been exposed to radiation; 115,000 people have been evacuated; 220,000 people have been relocated; 6,000 cases of thyroid cancer have been discovered. The contamination was widespread.

"Liquidators" Robots from the United States. In the years following the meltdown, between 300,000 and 600,000 liquidators were involved in cleaning up the 30 km evacuation zone around the plant.
