Colonial Rule: The history of Cuba began with the arrival of Christopher Columbus in 1492 and the subsequent invasion of the island by the Spaniards. - Cuba gained formal independence on May 20, 1902. On May 20, 1902, after a brief period of US occupation, the Treaty of Paris signed on December 10, 1898 between Spain and the US at the end of the Spanish-American War, Cuba officially received its independence. - Cuba’s independence day is on May 20th.
