In the first place, people do not always know where all donated money goes. When you are donating money for your local charity, you know where all the money goes because you know that people who are working with a charity. For instance, if you volunteer at the animal shelter, you can see for what all donated money is used for.  

Secondly, raising money for various charities   can help spread awareness. This means that, for example, for your birthday in social media you can create a fundraiser for several world problems such as deforestation, chronic diseases, animal extinction. It will be more useful than spending money on your birthday party. 

On the other hand, preparing a charity is a bit of challenge. You never know how many people will be able to donate or a charity event will succeed.

All this considered,  raising money for various charities is a controversial topic, but I believe that raising money for various charities is a great way to collect money for noble purposes.
