Most of us eventually grow to the age when we have and want to leave our nest. Some do it younger, some older, some never. But what‘s the best age for a young person to leave their parents’ home?

First of all, let’s take a look at some statistics. This chart indicates the average age of young people leaving their parents ‘ homes. At first glance, we can see that through the past 6 years age has decreased. The decrease is not dramatic, but it’s still there. In 2013 average age was around 21, in 2015 through 2017 age dropped to 20. And latest results show that young people in 2019 tended to leave their parents ‘home at 17. Even though numbers were going down in the past few years, it should stop or even increase a little.

So, what’s the best age to leave our nest? In my opinion, it’s somewhere between 20 and 25. First, because at this age you are already finished with school, and you have the idea of what you want to do with your life next. So, you can start working and then move out when you are financially capable. Secondly, in my opinion by the age of 25, you have to be responsible. And while it is way more comfortable to live with your parents, you must learn how to take care of yourself and home at least, not talking about the family you’ll have one day.
