Today, the NSPCC is the UK's leading charity specialising in child protection and the prevention of cruelty to children. Although the organisation looks very different from what it used to be, its purpose remains the same: to end cruelty to children. Their services cover England, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Channel Islands. The majority of the services are designed to demonstrate best practice and where necessary, satisfy unmet needs in a local area.
As the UK’s leading children's charity fighting to end child abuse, the NSPCC has remained committed to its mission for over 100 years - the mission to fight for every childhood.
The NSPCC are driven by the belief that everyone has a part to play in keeping children safe. By working together, they aim at protecting childhoods, preventing abuse, and transforming society so it is safer to all children.
Child abuse can take many forms. It can be physical, sexual or emotional, but just as often it is about not providing the things that all children need — love, care and attention. This is called neglect and it can be just as damaging as other kinds of child abuse.
Abuse and neglect can have devastating effects on a child’s development and society as a whole. However, working together and providing the right support for children and families can turn things around.
The NSPCC stated core values are based on the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. They are as follow:
Protection of children from all forms of violence and exploitation;
Taking responsibility to support the care and protection of children;
Listening to children and young people, respecting their views and responding to them directly;
In the fight against child abuse we all have a role to play. Any act, big or small, can make a real difference to a child and create a safer society for all children. That is why the NSPCC is here – to bring people together to protect children at risk, help those who have experienced abuse get back on track and find the best ways of preventing abuse from ever happening.
