Hobbit Chapter 17 Summary
Hobbit Chapter 17 summary.
The next day Bard, the elves, and a man in a cloak went to Thorin to bargain for the treasure again. Thorin said no at first, but then they showed him they had the Arkenstone. Thorin called them thieves but Bilbo confessed that he gave them the stone so they could finally get out. Thorin also began to scold Gandalf and Bilbo, and then the man in the cloak reveals himself as Gandalf. Thorin offered the fourteenth part of the treasure but did not give it to them immediately because he wanted to wait for the dwarf army first and fight for the stone. The next day, Dain and his 500-strong army arrived at the valley. Bard didn't want to let them in because he knew he would never get the treasure then. Bard wants to fight them, but the Elvenking refuses. The dwarves started to attack but Gandalf stopped them and said goblins and Wargs were approaching to the fight and it would be better to join forces.
