As the old adage “water, water everywhere” suggests, there is water all over our planet. In fact, water covers a total of 70.9% of the Earth's surface. 95.5% of it is in the form of salt water in the oceans, 1.7% in groundwater, 1.7% in glaciers and ice caps, and only 0.001% in the form of clouds and precipitation. Despite the huge volumes of water present, the supply of fresh water on Earth is actually limited. In fact, only 2.5% of the water on the planet is fresh, and most of it is frozen in glaciers at the poles or locked up deep underground, and less than 1% of the water is available directly for human consumption.
