Escape From North Korea Hyeonseo Lee Essay

Escape from North Korea Hyeonseo Lee essay.
Hyeonseo Lee is a North Korean woman who successfully escaped from North Korea together with her family. As you might know, escaping North Korea is not the easiest thing to do since it has been one of the world’s most secretive societies for decades. Despite that, she managed to do so and shared her story on the TED stage.
When Hyoenseo still lived in North Korea, she thought she lives in the best country on the planet. However, no one knew anything about the outside world except that America, South Korea and Japan are their enemies. As a girl, she was very curious about what is happening outside the border. In time, Hyeonseo changed her opinion about North Korea. She saw her first public execution when she was 7 and experienced famine in 90s, which she could have never thought of, that affected more than a million people. She was sent to China and separated from her family when she turned 14. Crossing the border of North Korea is nearly impossible, so Hyeonseo was lucky, but living in China as a North Korean is not only extremely difficult, but also dangerous. Refugees caught by Chinese police are sent back to North Korea for torture, imprison or public execution. Hyeonseo even had a interrogation in China because she was accused of being a North Korean. Hyeonseo decided on living in South Korea and found out that there is a huge gap between South and North Korea because they have been divised for 67 years. She did not feel right there and in addition to that, her family was going to be forcibly removed owing to money that Hyeonseo sent over to them. She went back to China so she could help her family. Sadly, after crossing the border of Laos her family got arrested twice. Second time, she had the lowest point of her life because she didn‘t have money to pay bribes and fines, but suddenly, a random stranger was keen to help and paid the rest to get North Koreans out of jail.
