While writing the employee handbook for Scandic Hotel group we were using some of the cultural theories: The Lewis model - Dimensions of behaviour, E. Hall’s Iceberg model. Also, when writing about the motivation we used A. Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs and D. McGregor’s X and Y theory.
We chose to use Lewis model because it helps us not only to see what kind of cultures there are in the world but also to consider what kind of cultures we want in our company and why we need people from one or another culture.
Edward Hall’s Iceberg model helps us to see that we can not “judge a book by it’s cover” - it shows that there is a lot of hidden information that is also important about the culture. The model helps us to understand that it is not enough just to accept people to work and that is it - we still need to try get to know their culture because when we know something more about it then we can create a better working atmosphere.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs helps us to see what can be the main needs of people so that they would be motivated to work with us. It is really important that our company could offer things that could satisfy new employees needs. Also, Maslow’s theory is one of the most used theories when speaking about motivation.
Finally, we chose to use McGregor’s X and Y theory because it is closely connected to Maslow’s theory and it helps to explain it even better. After using both of those theories we can fully understand people needs and we can start to consider what we should do in order to succeed to satisfy our employees.
Every person have their culture. Every culture is like a different colour. We want that Scandic Hotels would be coloured in all the possible colours which means that we want different people in our team. But for that we need to know a bit more about the cultures. That is why here we will be talking about different types of cultures using a different theories. “Culture plays a very large role but only as large as you want it to be . In any event you can turn the “volume” of your own culture up or down by changing your behaviour and thinking about what you do. So this means that culture can not be used as an excuse for everything.”(presentation “Diversity management”, 2019)
