The genre of this book is fantasy. The main character is Edward Prendick, a man who was travelling in the South Pacific Ocean when his ship went down. He was rescued after many days by another ship. One of the passengers, Montgomery, nursed him back to health. When Edward were healthy, Montgomery told him where they were sailing. Edward was very interested in Montgomery's life and wanted to know why Montgomery had lived in mysterious island in the Pacific. Edward was very curious because Montgomery didn't say anything, and animals living in ship looked suspiciously. When the captain threw Edward off the ship near Montgomery's island, he met Montgomery's master, Doctor Monreau.
