The Route To Sustainability Essay
The Route to Sustainability .
Since Earth resources are not finite it is of paramount importance to think of ways of how to manage them to ensure ourselves and future generations at least average quality of life. Three TED speakers are offering various solutions that are supposed to reduce the use of Earth resources.
The first idea was introduced by Adras Forgacs. The speaker presents biofabrication as an alternative to slaughter of animals for leather and meat. He claims that biofabrication is a better alternative to get these resources because of several reasons. Firstly, it is is environmentally responsible whereas livestock takes a serious toll on our land, fresh water and is one of the main producers of greenhouse gases. Secondly, it is humane – it requires only cells taken from animal by biopsy that causes no harm. Thirdly, it is efficient – biofabrication offers control to change any property of leather.
The second speaker, Arthur Potts Dawson wants to see change in food industry by introducing sustainable restaurants. He worries that we waste too much resources therefore he runs his own restaurant on sustainable energy only, conditions it by water only, use recycled furniture and so on. He also introduces four R’s which in his opinion should be utilized in order to prevent unnecessary waste - reduce, reuse, refuse and recycle.
The last speaker, Hans Rosling sees growing population as a problem and offers a solution to this problem. He found that when a child survival rate in a country reaches 90 percent the family size starts to decrease and that largest families exist in the poorest countries.
