The legend says that Violetta, a beautiful miller's daughter, refused to obey the local baron, which allowed him to sleep with her on the wedding night. Instead, the young maid took matters into her own hands and cut off the nobleman's head with a stroke of the sword.

Teams of "Aranceri" (orange leaders) fight an orange war with teams of "Tiranni" (tyrants), during an event that marks a battle between the people of Ivrea and the Napoleonic troops in the 12th century. During the battle, the "Aranceri" throw oranges to represent the stones that their ancestors threw at the palace in order to reconquer their city. The "Tiranni" defend themselves on a cart from a higher place.
