Summary of required reading texts: Teaching listening and Teaching speaking.


With the growing availability of the internet, children in many contexts have access to a range of listening materials through dedicated EFL sites and have the opportunity to enjoy You Tube stories, cartoons, and games on their tablets or computers at school or at home.

Teachers can be supported with good quality audio and video materials to accompany their teaching if they are not yet confident about their own language proficiency

One set of sub skills is referred to as bottom up processing skills. These help learners to build up the language from constituent parts. Relying on their knowledge of the linguistic system, listeners use bottom up processing skills to segment the speech they hear and make sense of it.

In parallel with bottom up processing skills, successful listeners also do simultaneous top down processing skills. They rely on their schematic knowledge, i.e. their mental frameworks for various topics and their world knowledge, to fill in gaps in their understanding, and make guesses and interpretations as they follow the listening text.

Children also enjoy language play, and even the youngest children can enjoy simple poems, rhymes, and tongue twisters.

Drama activities are also popular for practising speaking with young learners.
