Picasso's father and his uncle decided to send him to the San Fernando Royal Academy in Madrid, the country's most famous art school. When he was sixteen, Picasso went to Madrid and for the first time began to live independently. He did not like the strict discipline, so he quickly stopped attending lectures. Instead, Picasso visited the Prado Museum, where he visited the paintings. He most liked the work of El Greco. After studying in Madrid in 1900, Picasso went to Paris for the first time. There he met a journalist and poet Max Jacob who taught him French. They soon settled together. Max slept at night, while Picasso rested for the day and worked at night. They lived very poorly in 1901. Picasso illustrated the magazine Arte Joven, published by his friend's anarchist. It was at that time that he began to sign Picasso.

The Blue Period (1901-1904) consists of gloomy paintings painted in bluish tints, almost without mixing other colors. At that time, he often painted tired, horny mothers with children, melancholy images with beggars, blind people.

The Rose Period (1904-1906) brings a more entertaining mood, with orange and pinkish colors predominantly.
