This disease is similar to dengue fever, yellow fever and West Nile virus. Zika is a member of the virus family Flaviviridae. This virus primarily occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world.
This virus was first identified in Uganda in 1947. It was found in the body of monkeys. Later, in 1952, the virus was detected in people in Uganda and Tanzania. Outbreaks of Zika virus infection also have been reported in Africa, South America and Asia.
Many people infected with Zika virus won’t have symptoms or will only have mild symptoms. For example: fever, rash, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain or headache. Symptoms typically last for 2–7 days.
By the way Zika virus infections during pregnancy have been linked to miscarriage and microcephaly, a potentially fatal congenital brain condition.
