In 1964, a Japanese automobile engineer, Yasuzaburou Kobori, started developing an airbag "safety net" system that harnesses an explosive to inflate an airbag, for which he was later awarded patents in 14 countries.  In the early 1970s, Ford and General Motors began offering cars equipped with airbags, initially in government fleet purchased metallic green 1973 Chevrolet Impala sedans. In 1994, TRW began production of the first gas-inflated airbag. They are now mandatory in all cars since 1998.
