The respiratory system forms from the developing pharynx beginning at week 4. Primary bronchial buds appear later during week 4. Secondary bronchial buds branch from the primary bronchi during week 5 and grow into the surrounding mesoderm. By week 6, the tertiary bronchi of the left and right lungs have formed.

The connective tissue in the lung houses lymph nodes and lymph vessels.
