How does Priestley present Gerald Croft as a character who learns important lessons about himself and society?

Next, using the headings below, and the ideas from our discussions, write your own plan of understanding. An example is done for you. Complete the other headings.

Capitalism Vs Socialism-. Gerald is a capitalist. Priestley is a socialist. Priestley wanted to change capitalist into socialist. Gerald is comfortable in his society, as he benefits from the wealth.

Patriarchy – As a male in society, Gerald’s arrogance is presented as he assumes Sheila will want to continue their relationship despite his affair. He is respected more as a man and treats women with less respect. Daisy/Eva is used by Gerald as it suited him to be needed and desired. When he was finished with her, he dismissed her, and it was ‘acceptable’ in the eyes of Birling because men have the power to assert any authority they wish.

Class – Priestley feels middle and upper class benefited from society and lower class. Gerlad does try to help Eva/Daisy to show his sympathy towards her – could be genuinely nice, could be patronising. Many people of higher class may be dismissive of lower, therefore he shows potential to be a better person, as he does help.
