In his powerful speech, Martin Luther King Jr. explains the negative impacts of including American people in the battle of the Vietnam war. King supports his argument by irony, personal anecdotes, and rhetorical questions throughout his speech.

King’s argument is also furthered with his personal anecdote of the Ghettos of the North. While conversing with the boys from the ghettos, King mistakenly blames the violence of the boys while the real problem is most prominent in his very own government. King uses this personal anecdote to reflect on how his misconception has led to his deeper understanding of the situation at hand. In order for there to be peace, he must confront his government first. He then states that “For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent” to show that definite action must be taken to eliminate the violence that will eventually damage the countries people.
