Literacy is defined as a person’s ability to read and write.

It includes confidence and ability to interact using language to acquire, construct and communicate meaning in each aspect of the daily life.

Illiteracy is inability of a person to read and write.

According to UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), Pakistan has second highest number of out of school children in the world.

It is estimated that 22.8 million children of age 5-16 are out of school in Pakistan. (44%)

According to the economic survey of Pakistan in year 2017-18, illiteracy rate is increasing as compared to previous year’s rate.

Further increase in social disparities and inequalities

The countries with highest illiteracy rate are the countries with highest poverty rate
