The works of Markus (1887), Hofstede (2001) and others showed that there are some factors which determine people’s preferences as for communication styles. The affecting communication practices in a multinational environment are: the behavior of individuals toward a community, construing the self dependently or interdependently and sensitivity to philosophies, traditions and values.

“Pictures in our heads” or stereotypes often answers the question of what something should be like based on our cultural experiences. Stereotypes can convey both positive and negative meanings relying on such factors as age, gender, race, religion, profession and nationality. Exploring the stereotypes enables us to reconstruct the way people perceive themselves and others.

In May 2014 20 Chinese people was surveyed. The name of the company was not given for reasons of confidentiality. The respondents answered questions in writing.

Besides the questionnaire including the basic information, the participants completed 3 questionnaires: (1) Cultural differences in a work environment, (2) Stereotypes in intercultural communication contacts, and (3) Cultural basis for communication problems.

The respondents faced negative aspects of cultural diversity in their workplace and difficulties in communication with supervisors and co-workers from different cultures both during work hours and after work.
