When we communicate with others, we express our thoughts and feelings not only through the words, but also through our tone, facial expressions and body language. Body language is an important of non- verbal communication. It includes many different aspects of our everyday physical behaviour: how we sit or walk are some of the most basic.

To learn a language is more than just learning words and grammar, it involves learning another culture. We learn about our culture's body language before we learn to speak, without even being aware of it. Body language varies from , so its something to which language learners should pay attention. Sometimes, cultural differences in appropriate body language can cause discomfort or misunderstandings. For example the use of a smile varies from culture to culture. In some Asian cultures, a smile can show embarrassment or apology.
