In the beginning of a chosen part, in the first line, there is an allegorical use of a sentence “Rieux was already going up the stairs”. It symbolizes that novel’s personage Rieux survived from the plague and in that way gained more wisdom and experience. “The going up the stairs”, also symbolizes doctor’s inner development, and spiritual maturity. Also, there are metaphorical use of words “sea” and “town” in the same paragraph. The word “sea” stands symbolically to uncertainty and mystery:

According to, Camus philosophical ideas, these symbols could be interpreted differently, because every reader has its own experience in life.
