The author is saying that the reason people are getting addicted it that so they can cope with their dislocation. The author also argues that the Environment plays a huge role on a person’s addiction. For example, In situations where Indians had access to alcohol but their cultures had not been destroyed, they were able to easily incorporate alcohol into their native customs. Native people exhibited many of the symptoms associated with mass alcoholism without ever tasting a drop of alcohol in situations when native civilizations were destroyed but alcohol was not available.

The Rat Park study revealed a much more complex picture of addiction than many people had suspected. Other elements, including as the environment, feelings of loneliness or hopelessness, social ties, and a lack of control, are all likely to play a role in what leads to addiction.
