Accession Of Iceland To EU
Accession Of Iceland To EU.
Iceland, although a long way from continental Europe, it is clearly a European country. This country is a democratic and has strong links with the European Union. Therefore, it seems that this country should be in the European Union.
The main reason for the suspension of the negotiations was a big Euroscepticism. Euroscepticism is really strong among politicians. Currently, only one political party is on favor of EU membership. It is the Social Democrats. All other parties are against EU membership. Secondly, the Icelanders felt that joining the European Union is a threat to their national sovereignty and independence.
This situation may change in 2017, when new elections will be held. So, even though Iceland is now no longer a candidate for membership, in the future there are many chances to see Iceland in composition of European Union.
