Russell Baker „Growing Up“ A book review.
Purpose: The writer wants to show the real picture of the USA in the depression and World War 2. The story touches us by the truth.
Characters: There are a lot of characters in the book. The writer describes the people who influenced his life: his mother, father, sister Doris, grandmother, aunts and uncles, the everyday heroes and heroines of that time.
Baker’s mother, Lucy Elizabeth, was trained as a schoolteacher, had studied for a year in a college and encouraged her son’s aptitude for language. She is portrayed as hard working, devoted, strong-willed optimistic who never accepted defeat as an alternative to success.
The author’s grandmother, Ida Rebecca was a domineering woman, who trained her sons to march to her command. She was pitted against a woman as fierce as she was. She did not like Russell’s mother, they often quarreled.
